Project Delete: Update

After just a few days, I have officially deleted over 1,000 photos! And I'm nowhere near done. I am simultaneously proud of myself for finally doing it and ashamed that it is this bad!

While I'm finding some blurry, nonsense photos easy to delete, I'm also struggling a little. One of the things I'm finding the most difficult is deleting any photo of Audrey. They can be blurry, but I see a cute face I want to remember through the blur and I just can't do it.

Struggling with this has reminded me that there's a difference between a well composed, sharply focused photograph that you've created and a snapshot. And while I strive to create beautiful photographs, snapshots are just as important. Sometimes, especially with our children, there just isn't enough time to think and create, you just have to shoot and capture that spur of the moment slice of your life. As your photographic techniques improve, you may get luckier with these snapshots. But the fact of the matter remains: some days you're lucky and some days you're not.

These snapshots don't need to be perfect. And imperfect snapshots shouldn't always be deleted. They will often be a more accurate representation of our memories than a well thought-through photograph. In 10, 20, even 30 years, I will look back on these snapshots and I won't see the blur, but the smile or the silly face or the joy of experiencing something for the first time. And while the beautiful photographs may hang on our wall, the snapshots are our life. They are a reminder of the precious moments that can get buried in the depths of our mind or heart.

Snapshots are not always perfect, but neither are we. And just as our imperfection doesn't make us any less important, neither does it make our snapshots less important.

Project Delete

Hi! My name is Sara and I am a photo hoarder!
Phew! That feels nice to get off my chest! Seriously, I am really bad at deleting photos. I mean, really, REALLY bad! I save anything, like a hoarder, just in case I could possibly use it one day. And while that is a good reason to keep some photos, I also save a lot of junk that is the result of practicing a new technique or multiple shots taken in attempt to achieve something I have in mind. I even save the blurry ones.

My hard drive is filling up fast and slowing my computer down, so it is time to take control of the situation. I have to stop, but I also have to go back about 6 years and rectify the situation there too. So slowly but surely I'm going back through all of my photos and deleting. I set two main criteria to help me along the way.

1. Anything blurry goes! (Unless, of course, it was meant to be blurry.)
2. If it has no clear subject and nothing interesting about it, hit delete!

It's been hard, but I'm working my way through and I've deleted over 300 photos so far! I think there will still be junk left when I'm done, but at least it's a start.

Do you have criteria for what photos you delete? Do you delete it as soon as you import, or are you a terrible hoarder like me? If you have any tips or criteria for letting go, please share! I need all the help I can get!

new lens?

Okay photography friends, I need your help! I think it is time for me to start saving for a new lens, but I don't know what I want to get. I have a Canon Ultrasonic 28-200mm 3.5-5.6 and a Canon 50mm 1.8. I love, love, LOVE my 50 mm lens! I also like the versatility of my zoom lens, but to be honest, I'm not always crazy about the quality of the photos when I use it.

So what is your favorite lens? What should I add next? A better zoom lens? Another fixed lens? What is on your wish list?

"Every leaf speaks bliss to me, falling from the autumn tree."

I love fall! Here in New England, the foliage is incredibly gorgeous, and every year I am in awe of and grateful for the beauty that surrounds me. There are also so many fun things to do this time of year! Apple picking and a trip to the pumpkin patch were at the top of our list, and we had a blast!

Tutu Photos 2012

I just realized this morning that I posted a teaser of the tutu photos I took of Audrey, but I didn't actually post any of the photos, besides the ones in my new header. So here are some of my favorites!

I Clicked it Up a Notch - September 2012

Click It Up A Notch

I feel like I really "clicked it up a notch" in September. I took so many photos of Audrey that I just loved, including the tutu photos and wedding dress photos! I don't know if this is the very best photo I took this past month, but it is definitely my favorite. I absolutely love watching my husband and daughter together. It makes my heart swell with love and gratitude.

I Heart Faces - Beautiful B&W

It has been a while since I participated in an I Heart Faces photo challenge, but with the AWESOME prizes they're offering and the B&W theme, I couldn't resist!

I took this photo of my very best friend just minutes before her wedding! She got married at the public library which was so incredibly cool and made for some interesting photo opportunities! The light was just streaming in the windows at this point and she was radiating joy and excitement! Photos with such beautiful natural light and raw emotion just beg to be B&W in my opinion!

photography

When I'm not chasing around after my sweet little stair and coffee table climbing cutie, my photography takes up most of my time. I'm not a professional and I don't plan to be, but I'm constantly trying to learn and improve my techniques. I've had a lot of people tell me recently that I should start a business, but I don't think they understand the amount of work being a professional photographer entails. I think I'm pretty good at it and it's fun! Not to mention the awesome images I get of my friends and family! But right now, being a mommy is my full time job.

Anyway, I've had a photography blog for awhile now, but much like this blog, I wasn't very good at keeping it updated. I just recently redesigned the whole blog and I am in love with how it looks! I am trying to post (or schedule posts) just about every day. The "Photos" link on this blog will take you there, or you can just go there directly http://blueeyedperspective.blogspot.com, but please take a look around and follow it if you want. Some time in the near future, I may actually add some items to my etsy shop and put a link to it up on the photography blog as well. I even have some giveaways I'm working on!

I can't believe I just wrote an entire post that (almost) didn't mention Audrey! Can't let that happen, can we?! How about a photo? :)
Audrey giving Daddy kisses!
There! That's more like it! :)

Photography

Did I tell you all that I started a photography blog?? I think I did, but I can't really remember and I don't feel like searching through my archives. So, if you don't already visit it, come check out the view through my viewfinder, my Blue Eyed Perspective!

A lot of the photos I post there are repeats of photos I post here, but I do post them larger there and the blog has a totally different feel. I hope you all enjoy it!

More new exciting things for 2010!

I've been working on a photography blog for awhile now, but whether I wasn't happy with it or just wasn't confident enough to share it, I kept it private.

Well, after redesigning my blog layout here yesterday, I was feeling confident and inspired! So, I tweaked some things, and I am proud to introduce my new photography blog to you...

Blue Eyed Perspective

There's actually a very special post today! I don't know how often I'll post to this new blog, but my hope is that I will be inspired to take more photos and post often because I know it is out there for the world to see!

I hope you enjoy my photos and please let me know what you think of the new blog!

*Update*
Apparently, the photos on my new blog aren't loading in Internet Explorer. They do load in Firefox, but I'm working on trying to figure out the problem! If you post large photos to your blog in Blogger and know how to fix this, please fill me in!

**Update 2** I didn't figure out how to fix it, but I did find another way to post larger photos that works in BOTH Firefox AND Internet Explorer! YAY! Go check it out!

Exciting news!

Good news has been rare around these parts recently. But yesterday, I got an exciting request! I have been asked to display some of my photography at a coffee shop in my hometown in December!!

I was quite shocked at first. I don't really consider myself that good, but I think that mindset is good for me. If I don't think I'm as good as I should be, then it motivates me to learn and take better photos. But apparently there are people out there that think I am good enough for this and want me to have the courage to share my photos with others!

So I agreed! Not that this is a big art show or a museum or anything, but it might as well be to me! I'm so excited and nervous at the same time. I have to start going through all my photos and maybe taking a few new ones, and deciding which ones I want to display. And hopefully this will motivate me to finally finish designing my photography blog, so it's ready for around the same time.

In the next few weeks, I may even post some photos and ask for your help choosing! So stick around...knowing my indecisive self, I'm certainly going to need all the help I can get!
